| Stam 38 |
In the Dutch Registry, the various motherlines are called stam. The breeding program of Fantasy Friesians, Inc. is focused entirely on Stam 38, the so-called Benedictus motherline. Stam 38 is rare, well known for excellence, and very desirable.
IMPORTANT BREEDING CONCEPT: It is the quality of the mare and her gene pool that actually determines the quality of the offspring. This is especially true in the Friesian breed, because the process for a stallion to become authorized in the Dutch Registry (FPS) is so selective and grueling. Only 1-2% of colts go on to reach authorization. All of the authorized stallions in the Dutch Registry are spectacular. There are no slouches or "less desirable" stallions. Of course, a particular stallion may be even more desirable in order to bring out a specific quality or characteristic for which he is known. For Tjimme, it is his beauty and beautiful, gentle personality.
The quality of the authorized stallion gene pool in the Dutch Registry is as good as it gets. The paternal genetic contribution to the offspring has therefore been maximized by this rigorous selection process of authorizing a stallion in the Dutch Registry, Het Friesch Paarden Stamboek. In essence, this factor has been eliminated from the breeding equation. Each authorized stallion in the Dutch Registry brings a paternal gene pool of the very best quality to each and every breeding.
Every breeding season, from all over the world, registered purebred Friesian mares of varying quality are bred to these spectacular authorized stallions. The results are foals of varying quality. A few rate 1st premiums; others, 2nd and 3rd premiums; still others, no premiums or a few are found to be unacceptable for registration in the Foalbook. Why? It is the quality of the mare and that of the maternal gene pool that primarily determines the quality of the offspring.
SIGNIFICANCE: If you are breeding your own mare, then choose a stallion who will add a desirable characteristic or trait to the foal (size, upright neck, "Tjimme-sweet" personality, etc.). Good luck with the offspring. But if you are looking to purchase the very best quality foal that you can afford or if you wish to set the foundation of a breeding program designed to produce highest quality babies year after year after year, then you must study the quality of the dam and her maternal gene pool with extreme care. Remember, it is the dam that will determine the long term success of your breeding program, regardless of which stallion you use this year, next year, or any year.
LEGENDARY STAM 38 MARE: Wijkje was a spectacular and legendary Stam 38 Model Preferent mare and Performance Mother. Wijkje died in 1992 and produced 2 authorized stallions (Djurre and Tsjerk), 3 model mares (of which one was the grandmother of our Stam 38 star mare Maike), and 6 star daughters! Wow! This is the quality of the maternal gene pool in the Stam 38 motherline. Obviously, not all Stam 38 mares are descendents of Wijkje.

Zjetta
and her 12 hour old foal continue the Stam 38 tradition of excellence |
Our star mare Maike has represented the Stam 38 legacy well and is the foundation of our breeding program. Maike's offspring have been superb. She has produced six babies: three 1st premiums and three 2nd premiums. Maike has three star children. One more star offspring, and Maike becomes Ster en Preferent. Click here for Maike's pedigree.
Maike's daughters, Zjetta, Olympia, and Europa are magnificent. Zjetta was sired by Gerlof; Olympia and Europa, by Tjimme. Zjetta and Olympia both earned 1st premiums as foals; Europa earned a 1st premium as a two year old and was made Grand Champion Mare 2003, beating all star candidates for that year. Zjetta, Olympia, and Europa all have their stars. Zjetta, Olympia, and Europa all were Grand Champion Mares (Olympia in 1999; Zjetta in 2000; Europa in 2003). Europa was Reserve Champion Filly in 2002. Olympia was awarded a 1st premium again at 3 years of age when she earned her star. Zjetta's daughters are beautiful. Leda earned a 1st premium and was Grand Champion Filly in 2003. Daphne and Thais are gorgeous.
Our breeding program is presently based on these Stam 38 mares. Click here for Zjetta's pedigree, Olympia's pedigree, Thäis's pedigree, Europa's pedigree, and Daphne's pedigree.
As of Year 2000, there have been eleven Stam 38 offspring out of our mares. In 2001, the keurings were cancelled because of the events of September 11. Let's take a look at the statistics:
|
Five Stam 38 offspring earned 1st premiums. Six earned 2nd premiums |
|
Six of the eleven Stam 38 offspring are old enough to have been judged for star. Five of these six have their star. The sixth has not been shown for his star, because his owner was of the misimpression that he would have to be gelded to be judged for star. This young stallion, Milo, has been very successful in the showring and will be shown for his star in 2002. |
|
In this group of eleven Stam 38 offspring, there were two Grand Champion Mares, one Reserve Champion Mare, two Grand Champion Colts, and one Reserve Champion Colt. Really a superlative record! |
